Frequently asked questions

What is Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft Fabric is a one-stop shop for all things data analytics. It combines multiple separate tools into a single unified data platform. At its core is OneLake, a centralised, multi-cloud data lake that provides a unified storage layer that can support a single source of truth when governed effectively, eliminating the need to move or duplicate data across systems. By combining storage with integrated AI services and Copilot, Fabric allows you to ground your AI models in high-quality, governed data, enabling you to build, deploy, and interact with intelligent agents directly within your analytics environment.

Why is Fabric Important for my Organisation?

Microsoft Fabric eliminates data silos by consolidating all your data on a single platform. This allows all the teams in your organisation to work from the same information and helps you prepare for scalable AI. Furthermore, with its flexible pay-as-you-go pricing, you can scale resources up or down to match your actual usage, ensuring cost-efficiency as your analytical needs grow.

How to get started with Microsoft Fabric?

If you already use Power BI, you’re in a strong starting position, but Fabric still needs to be enabled by an admin and backed by a Fabric or Premium capacity. From there, you create Fabric-enabled workspaces, organise data within OneLake, and adapt or extend your existing Power BI assets rather than fully rebuilding them.

How is Fabric different from Power BI?

Power BI is the reporting and visualisation layer, the dashboards you see at the end. Microsoft Fabric is the unified platform behind the scenes that makes those dashboards accurate. It includes data engineering, data warehousing, data science, and real-time analytics, all built on a single data layer called OneLake. Power BI hasn’t been replaced. It is now one part of a much bigger platform.

What is Microsoft Fabric Capacity (F SKUs)?

Microsoft Fabric Capacity (F SKUs) provides the shared compute layer that runs workloads across the platform from data engineering and lakehouses to SQL, AI, and reporting. Instead of licensing separate tools, organisations provision Capacity Units (CUs) that are consumed across all Fabric workloads, creating a unified and scalable foundation.

How do you know what capacity size will work for you?

Microsoft Fabric capacity ranges from F2 to F2048, with F64 as a common starting point for some production workloads. The right size depends on your data volumes, refresh schedules, concurrency, and AI workloads.

Under-sizing can slow performance, while over-sizing wastes budget. A trusted partner can assess your usage patterns, model Capacity Unit (CU) consumption, and right size your F SKUs to balance cost, performance, and future growth.

How do you migrate from Power BI Premium to Microsoft Fabric Capacity?

Migrating from Power BI Premium (P SKUs) to Microsoft Fabric Capacity (F SKUs) typically involves three core steps: assessing current workloads and usage, selecting the right F SKU (such as F64 for many production scenarios), and reassigning workspaces to the new capacity.

While the technical transition is relatively straightforward, careful planning is critical to avoid performance issues, refresh disruption, or unnecessary cost increases. A trusted partner can benchmark usage, right-size capacity, and manage the transition to minimise risk and ensure a smooth user experience.

Can you turn off Fabric Capacity?

Fabric uses a pay-as-you-go model for capacity, which means you can pause and resume your capacity whenever you like.

What’s the difference between Microsoft Fabric and Databricks?

Both Microsoft Fabric and Databricks are modern lakehouse platforms, but they serve slightly different needs.

Microsoft Fabric offers a fully managed, end-to-end SaaS environment that brings data engineering, warehousing and reporting together in one place. It is often the quickest path to value for organisations already using Microsoft tools and looking for simplified governance and analytics.

Databricks provides deeper flexibility for advanced data engineering and data science, making it ideal for complex processing, large-scale workloads and custom AI use cases. Many organisations use both, Microsoft Fabric for governed reporting and business insight and Databricks for advanced analytics.

What is OneLake in Microsoft Fabric?

Microsoft OneLake is the unified data lake that sits at the heart of Microsoft Fabric. It provides a single, central location where all your organisation’s data is stored, managed, and accessed, regardless of which team or workload uses it.
