Microsoft’s New Solutions Partner Pillars: What has changed and what it means for your funding
Navigating the Microsoft Partner ecosystem can feel like a maze. You’re not just looking for a partner who ticks your boxes, you need someone with deep expertise and a proven track record to guide you on your journey. Microsoft Solutions Partner designations and specialisations act as a beacon, highlighting the partners who truly know their stuff.
However if you’ve looked recently, things have changed. For FY27, Microsoft has reshaped its partner programme around how organisations are buying and building today, with (unsurprisingly) AI at the centre.
This blog explores what has changed, why designations and specialisations still matter, and how working with a specialised partner can unlock Microsoft funding to accelerate your project.
From six pillars to three: what are Microsoft’s new solutions partner pillars?
In 2026, Microsoft consolidated its six Solutions Partner pillars into three: Cloud & AI Platforms, AI Business Solutions, and Security.
Cloud & AI Platforms
This brings together the previous Data & AI, Digital & App Innovation and Infrastructure designations into a single pillar. It reflects the reality that modern cloud projects rarely sit in one lane. A data platform build, an AI application and their underlying Azure infrastructure are all part of the same journey.
AI Business Solutions
This combines the previous Modern Work and Business Applications designations, recognising that productivity tools, business applications and AI agents are converging into one connected way of working.
Security
Security remains its own pillar, and rightly so. With cyber threats evolving as quickly as the technology itself, expertise in security solutions and threat protection stays front and centre.
It’s important to understand that the consolidation isn’t Microsoft lowering the bar; it’s them redrawing the map around the AI-era customer outcomes rather than product categories and technology. Partners still have to earn their designations through the Partner Capability Score, a framework built on skilling, performance and customer success. The change simply means that a partner holding designations across the new pillars has demonstrated expert breadth across the full journey, from infrastructure and data through to AI applications and agents.
Why do Microsoft specialisations matter?
Once a partner earns a Solutions Partner designation, they can pursue the coveted Microsoft Specialisations. These remain the real differentiator you should be looking for as part of your partner selection process. If you are looking to choose the right data transformation partner for your journey, these specialisations hold a lot of weight.
A designation is Microsoft’s stamp of approval, and a Specialisation is its seal of excellence. To earn one, partners must pass a rigorous external audit demonstrating:
- Expertise in specific solutions – advanced, proven knowledge and skills in their chosen Microsoft technology or service.
- Customer success and proven impact – evidence of successful customer engagements and real-world results, backed by case studies and references.
- Certifications and up-skilling – partner employees holding specific Microsoft certifications related to the specialisation, confirming they have qualified experts deliver the work.
- Ongoing commitment to quality – specialisations aren’t just earned once and kept forever. Partners must maintain certifications and keep up to speed with Microsoft’s evolving technology to retain them.
When you see a specialisation badge, you know you’re working with a team that has truly mastered their craft and had that mastery independently verified.
What funding is available through Microsoft’s specialised partners?
Microsoft backs its specialised partners with funding programmes designed to accelerate and de-risk customer projects. These incentives exist because Microsoft wants customers to succeed on its platforms, and it trusts audited, specialised partners to deliver that success.
What does that mean for you in practice? Depending on your project and eligibility, Microsoft funding can support:
Assessments and proofs of value: Before you commit to a major platform decision, funding can support a structured assessment or proof of value engagement. That means exploring what Microsoft Fabric, Azure Databricks or Azure AI Foundry could do for your organisation, with findings and recommendations you can take to your board, at reduced or no cost to you.
Data platform modernisation: Funding is available to support the delivery of modern data platform projects built on Microsoft Fabric and Azure Databricks, helping you move from legacy warehouses and siloed reporting to a single, AI-ready data estate.
AI applications and agents: Microsoft is investing heavily in partners who help customers build and deploy AI-powered applications and agentic AI solutions using Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI and GitHub. If you’re exploring how AI agents could transform a process or service, funding can help get a pilot moving.
The common theme is that this funding is only accessible through partners who hold the right specialisations. It’s one of the most tangible ways a partner’s badges translate into value for you – faster starts, lower risk and quicker return on your investment.
Why choose a specialised Microsoft partner?
If your chosen Microsoft partner holds a specialisation, you can be confident they’ve demonstrated deep expertise across the Microsoft products and services that matter to your project. That means best practice, sound guidance and the skills to make the technology fit your specific needs.
You’ll also benefit from the partner’s access to the latest tools, updates and resources from Microsoft, and as above, from the funding programmes that specialised partners can unlock on your behalf. Selecting a specialised partner lowers project risk and helps you maximise your investment with expert guidance and reliable results.
