The Role in Practice
The Principal Consultant is the person that the customer sees providing designs that comprehensively address the needs and, perhaps most crucially, responding to change and issues calmly and coherently.
The Principal Consultants must be experts in their field. The role is one that works closely with customers who may be expert too and we must be seen to be credible in their eyes. The Principal Consultants may be asked to Quality Assure the customer’s work and they must be able to discharge that responsibility.
The Principal Consultant will be responsible for gathering requirements at the commencement of a project; this may be through the medium of a situation assessment, requirements gathering workshops or requirements interviews. The results may be expressed as Initiation, Functional and/or Technical Specifications. They may also be expressed in a Situation Assessment.
The Principal Consultants are required to lead on the establishment of the standards for the technical design documents that are used in their specialist area. They must ensure that these documents are suitable for their purpose and that they are used consistently on projects. There must be a continual process of improvement. These documents can include process flows, database design, entity relationship diagrams, test plans, report specs, cube designs, data mapping, applications links, project plans and flow charts amongst others. These documents are integral to the Principal Consultant role and are expected as a norm in most of our engagements. The Principal Consultant is required to think in these terms and assess which to use on a project by project and situation by situation basis.
The Principal Consultant is the “eyes and ears” of the project. They must be able to report on all project management information plus all the information that surrounds the project. We strive for excellence which means we think ahead, and we plan ahead. The Principal Consultant is performing that function as a habit and will share knowledge with their manager.
The Principal Consultant must balance the need to complete a project within the time, quality and cost tolerances. To do this successfully the Principal Consultant must understand and be sympathetic to the customers’ need to attend to business-as-usual whilst still driving the engagement forward. To do this successfully requires maturity and experience and to perform a balancing act between the customer and Simpsons and to use the appropriate levers to achieve the desired outcome. These levers may vary from situation to situation but the requirement for close connection to the project, the customer and Simpsons remains.
Often a Principal Consultant will provide development resource alongside other project team members. The Principal Consultant also has the role of mentoring more junior members of the services team and will be expected to support our Graduate Recruitment and Development Program.
This is a UK based role and will include travel.
