Purchasing is no longer the "back-office" function it used to be. Enlightened organisations have realised that smart procurement practises pay off.
The £1.6 billion turnover, international engineering organisation, IMI plc places strategic global procurement among its five "key themes" and little wonder.
Last year the first global procurement project saved the business just under £15m.
Its success has now led to a new, far-reaching imitative - Project Unity - aimed at providing a level of spending analysis across the organisation which was previously unheard of.
IMI, in common with many large multi-national businesses which have grown predominantly through acquisition, has a large number of disparate I.T. operating systems which store and report information in quite different ways.
For the Global Procurement & Supply team this was proving a major hindrance to their need to understand and analyse the procurement habits of the many different business units across the world in order to identify synergies and opportunities for increased leverage.
